The department of Creuse is simply beautiful as are the neighbouring departments of Corrèze and Haute-Vienne in the Limousin region. Like many departments it is named after the river that meanders though the landscape. Three other rivers pass through the area, the Taurion, Gartempe and Petite-Creuse rivers. Creuse is located to the north west edge of the Massif Central mountain range and is about 6/7 hours drive from Calais and about 3 hours from Paris.
The inhabitants are called the ’Creusois’ and are warm and welcoming, the area is one of the less populated departments of France being mainly rural and making the choice of properties to buy there very attractive.
Creuse has only 260 towns and villages, the urban areas are situated around the towns of Aubusson, Bourganeuf, Guéret, Sainte-Feyre and La Souterraine, these five towns form the urban centre of Creuse. This urban area is bursting with history, places to go, lots to see and many leisure activities but the major benefits of this department are the rural life and natural landscape, it is renowned for being very green and peaceful, a real haven for nature lovers with a large part of the department being covered by woodland.
There is no major industry and the economy of this department is derived from tourism, the craft industry and agriculture.
