- CERTIFIED AND STANDARD TRASNLATION:

Translation is the process of rendering a written text from one language into another; it can be either "standard" (non-certified) or certified (sworn).

Note: It is a mistake to believe that simply speaking two languages ​​qualifies one to "translate," as translation is not merely a mechanical process.

For any professional translator, the guiding principle is that while an excellent command of two or more languages ​​is essential for the profession, it is not sufficient on its own to produce high-quality translations. A skilled translator is able to identify the specific nuances of the source text and convey the same concepts and messages in the target language, without additions or omissions, while taking into account all aspects of the original text, such as linguistic and cultural factors. The goal is to produce a complete, coherent translation that aligns with the client's objectives and requirements.

- FREE TRANSLATION:

Free translation applies to all types of texts, with the exception of documents holding official, legal, or statutory status. Such documents require a “certified” translation.

- CERTIFIED TRANSLATION:

A sworn or certified translation is produced by a sworn expert translator, listed on the roll of judicial experts for a Court of Appeal (as well as the Court of Cassation), who is the only person authorized to certify that a translation conforms to the original document. Such translations are most often required by government authorities or administrative bodies.

Only a sworn translator is authorized to issue translations that hold official status with any administrative body. This sworn translator is an expert within the legal meaning of the term; the relevant officers of the court hold the only officially recognized title: "expert translator-interpreter attached to the Court of Appeal" (or the Court of Cassation). For a translation to be "certified as a true copy of the original," it must be accompanied by the original document, and both the original and the translation must bear the translator’s signature and stamp.

Experts listed on the rolls of the judicial system (judicial experts) or the registers of administrative courts are collectively referred to as "court-appointed experts" (*experts de justice*). The title of court-appointed expert is protected and contingent upon registration with a Court of Appeal or the Court of Cassation. An expert translator or interpreter acts as an auxiliary to the justice system, assisting it in its work. The title of expert translator and/or interpreter should not be confused with that of a CESEDA interpreter; the latter’s swearing-in by the Judicial Court of their place of registration falls solely under the Code on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners and the Right of Asylum (CESEDA).

Each year, a national list and lists for each Court of Appeal are drawn up, featuring experts appointed for both civil and criminal matters. These lists are compiled in accordance with a classification system established by an order from the Keeper of the Seals (Minister of Justice).

Expert translators produce certified (or official) translations of various documents at the request of courts, government agencies, legal professionals (bailiffs, notaries, lawyers), businesses, or private individuals. These documents include procedural documents, evidence submitted to courts, letters rogatory, bailiff’s acts (service of process, seizures, etc.), notarial deeds (wills, etc.), administrative documents, civil status records, contracts, articles from legal codes, and more. In criminal cases, the translation of foreign-language documents must be entrusted to an expert listed on a court register (either at the Court of Appeal or the Court of Cassation).

Beyond these judicial assignments, the expert translator is the only person authorized to produce certified translations (also known as "official" or "sworn" translations) for private individuals, lawyers, notaries, businesses, government agencies, and others. These are documents originally written in a foreign language, such as civil status records, divorce decrees, notarial deeds, wills, certificates of heirship, or child adoption papers, that must be translated into French before being submitted to French authorities.

Such translations are often required to obtain official documents (such as residence permits or Social Security registration) or to provide French documents requested by foreign consulates or authorities. To be valid in France, a foreign document must either be written in French or be accompanied by a certified translation. Translations produced in France by an expert translator are generally recognized abroad.
