The department of Saone et Loire is in the Bourgogne region, or Burgundy if you prefer. The locals and the French in general refer to this region as Bourgogne, it is only the rest of the world that translates it as Burgundy, so take your pick.
Burgundy comprises the following four departments: Côte-d’Or, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne and Nièvre.
Most of the population of Saone-et-Loire department live in the east as this area is much better developed in terms of transport networks and has much more employment. it is not far for people to commute to Lyon which is one of France’s biggest cities.
Saone et Loire offers some very diverse landscapes which are a delight to discover: hedged / bocage farmlands, vineyards, woodlands, lakes and ponds will probably seduce most of you. The department also boasts a great heritage in its buildings, Roman villages, vineyards and more.
Bourgogne is one of France’s main wine producing areas, that is how you will know it as Burgundy I guess. It is well known for both its red and white wines, mostly made from Pinot noir and Chardonnay grape varieties, although others are used including Aligote, Pinot blanc, Gamay and Sauvignon blanc.
