Ahead of Thursday’s election, the polls show the Conservatives are way out in front.

While a Conservative majority will be seen as good news for the Pound, a lot of the move will be already priced in.

Any other result would be expected to trigger a large fall in the Pound.

One of the buzzwords of this election has been ‘clarity’.

However, we view the election as the start, not the end, of the Brexit journey.

It will become evident over the coming weeks and months that there’s a lot still to be done before we have any real clarity.

The latest polls show the Conservatives have regained a double-digit lead.

This is seen by investors as good for the Pound as it reduces uncertainty over Brexit.

What is clear right now is that the Pound remains at the mercy of polls. Not a lot else matters.

In other words, for those with currency requirements, it’s become a binary bet on the outcome of the election.

The Conservatives will need to deliver a clear majority, or the Pound is likely to collapse.

Does the upcoming election offer more downside than upside for the Pound?

Bear in mind that the Pound is already up 8% since early September on expectations of a clear win for the Conservatives.

But two polls in two days have shown Labour is closing the gap.

Remember, even if Labour doesn’t win the election, anything less than a big majority for Conservatives will lead to more Brexit uncertainty.

And given there’s a lot of ‘good news’ already built into the Pound, it leaves the rate vulnerable to any setbacks – as seen this week.

Exchange rates often do the opposite to what you think because what is expected is already built into the rate before it happens – so only the unexpected can trigger a big move in the rate.

Right now anything other than a clear win for the Conservatives is the ‘unexpected’– which is why the Pound could face downside risk over the coming weeks.

With just over three weeks to go, all eyes are on the election.

But we wonder whether it will bring the certainty over Brexit as hoped?

Just about everyone expects the Conservatives to win.

However, that’s not the real issue...

Boris Johnson needs more than a win; he needs a large majority to get his Brexit bill passed. And that is far from certain.

A small Conservative majority (which Nigel Farage is predicting) may keep us stuck on the Brexit merry-go-round.

As HSBC put it “anything can happen”.

The period of stability we are seeing in the Pound may well be short-lived.

Option prices on Pound Sterling have doubled in value since the beginning of the month.

In plain English, it means investors are very nervous about the result and we could see sharp moves in exchange rates around election time.
