Pound falls towards 2022 lows

The Pound to Euro rate has tumbled over the last few days.

Only yesterday it was barely holding above the low point for the year.

The simmering problems in the Ukraine have got investors spooked.

Note - The Pound tends to get hit harder than the Euro in times of trouble.

We also think the market expectation for four UK interest rate hikes in 2022 may be a bit too ambitious.

If this expectation doesn’t eventuate, it will be bad news for the Pound.

I guess it’s another example of things changing rapidly in these uncertain times.

Trends can be short-lived. Opportunities can be fleeting.

As always we will be keeping an eagle eye on what’s happening in currency markets.

Travel to France is Open Again

France has Re-Opened for Travel

As of today (January 14th 2022), fully vaccinated people travelling from the UK to France will no longer need an essential reason for travel and no longer have to quarantine on arrival.

You will still, however, be required to present the negative result of a Covid test [PCR or lateral flow] taken in the 24 hours before your journey begins.

It should also be noted that from Saturday all adults, residents and visitors, will need to have had a booster Covid jab to be considered 'fully vaccinated' under French health pass rules for leisure and attending events within France, if their second jab was more than seven months ago (the NHS Covid App is acceptable in France for 'health pass' purposes).

Boosters are not however a requirement for entry to the country, though this could change later in the year.

Viewing appointments are now being snapped up quickly so get in touch and secure your viewing trip appointments as soon as possible.

Pound pushes towards 2 Year Highs

The Pound continues its bullish trend.

Right now it is sitting on the cusp of 2-year highs against the Euro.

Investors are thinking that Omicron cases will peak in the UK soon.

That’s what happened in South Africa – a rapid rise followed by a rapid fall.

If things pan out that way, the pressure will be back on the Bank of England to tackle UK inflation.

In other words, investors’ are betting that interest rate rises are coming.

The first test will be early next month.

Market expectations are for 3-4 hikes this year alone, so the Bank of England needs to get a move on.

Of course if they choke (on their crumpets and jam), the Pound’s gains could easily go into reverse.

One thing’s for sure…

Nothing stays static for long in the currency markets.

With so much going on, uncertainty and volatility are here to stay.

But where there’s movement, there’s opportunities.

Pound Jumps to 22 Month High

Happy New Year and Happy New High!

They say greed and fear drive markets, but hope can be a powerful force too.

Right now the Pound is riding high at 22-month highs against the Euro despite the large number of new Covid cases.

It seems investors are hopeful the UK government will resist calls for further restrictions and thereby keep the economic recovery on track.

In Europe, governments face a similar dilemma. But the policy response of each EU country is less clear.

Both the Pound and the Euro will stay sensitive to coronavirus reports, and the announcements of leaders and health officials.

We’re not out of the woods yet.

We expect exchange rates to remain volatile.
