The US Dollar has jumped to 35-year highs against Pound Sterling.

It’s perhaps even more surprising as the US government is trying to depreciate the Dollar.

I don’t need to tell you what’s dominating currency markets.

As you would expect, all currencies have become highly sensitive to the latest Coronavirus developments.

In relative terms, the Pound has not fared well.

Last week it fell to 5-month lows against the Euro and US Dollar.

That might come as a surprise given Europe has been hit harder by the virus than the UK.

But in times of turmoil, investors look for safe places to park their money.

The US Dollar, Euro, Swiss Franc and Japanese Yen are considered less risky than Pound Sterling.

That’s the perception anyway. And perception becomes reality.

It’s impossible to predict how bad things will get or when things will recover.

There are signs of stability in China – which offers hope. But it may be too late to prevent a global recession.

While the mornings are getting lighter, so is Sterling.

This morning the Bank of England cut interest rates to a record low in response to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Later today, more stimulus is expected in the first Budget of Boris Johnson's majority government.

Historically, Pound Sterling has not performed well in moments of crisis.

The usual ‘risk aversion’ rules look to be kicking in.

Sterling has been selling off against JPY/EUR/USD/CHF – which are seen as 'safe havens' in times of trouble.

With all that's going on, the sentiment around currencies is changing extremely quickly.
